Comparing Shingles:
SBS vs Asphalt vs Atlas StormMaster

Replacing a roof can be an overwhelming task for homeowners; not only is it an investment but there are many different options when it comes to roof shingles. If you’ve shopped around to get an idea as to which type of shingle to choose, then you’ve probably heard of the top three: asphalt, Atlas StormMaster and SBS shingles.

While all shingles have the same jobs—to protect your home’s interior from water damage, deflect sunlight, block heavy winds, etc.—they’re not created equal. What are some of the differences and how do you know which one is best for your home?

The expertly trained professionals at U.S. Exterior by Seidel are here to help! Keep reading to learn all about roof shingle differences, comparing SBS shingles vs. asphalt vs. Atlas StormMaster.

SBS Shingles

The newest of the bunch, SBS shingles are what we call a “hot trend” in the residential roofing market. Many homeowners are making the switch from traditional shingles to SBS for a few reasons, but we’ll get to that a little later. First, let’s explain what exactly SBS shingles are.

SBS shingles are made from styrene-butadiene-styrene, or a modified asphalt formula that’s basically an extremely durable rubber-like material. This material was made to increase a shingles’ durability when it comes to weather and overall flexibility so it can withstand harsh elements and strong winds.

So, what are some of the benefits of selecting SBS shingles for your home? SBS shingles offer many benefits for homeowners: they’re weather resistant, tear resistant and offer complete granule retention. What do we mean by weather resistant? They can hold up to hail, something most shingles can’t compete with. By complete granule retention, we mean that the granule adhesion of SBS shingles is better compared to the average shingle in that granules will stay put on the shingle instead of falling off.

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles are the most common choice among homeowners for many reasons: they’re a great value, there are many different styles to choose from, and they can hold up well for many years.

Unlike SBS shingles, asphalt shingles are made from, you guessed it- asphalt, along with fiberglass and other granules like vitrified brick, quartz, stone, mica, sand, or talc. Asphalt shingles are relatively easy to install and have the lowest installation cost compared to other shingles.

Whether you want to add a touch of pizazz to your roof or match your shutters to your shingles, asphalt shingles allow for customization that you can’t get with all types of roof shingles. Available in an array of colors and styles like slate, weathered wood and black to name a few, there are many ways to customize your asphalt shingle roof.

One downfall to asphalt shingles, however, is that their lifespan may be cut short by extreme weather conditions. Because we live in a climate with harsh winters and potentially damaging thunderstorms in the spring and summer months, asphalt shingles may wear down faster than those made other materials.

Atlas StormMaster Shingles

These shingles definitely live up to their name, StormMaster. Atlas StormMaster Shingles are made using Scotchgard Protector, an element that prevents algae build-up. Black algae streaks make roofs less appealing, something homebuyers really take into consideration when purchasing a home.

Not only are Atlas StormMaster shingles algae-resistant, but they’re also weather resistant, especially in high winds (up to 150 mph) and impacts like hail and other common debris. Atlas StormMaster shingles are manufactured using SBS, that extremely durable modified asphalt material we mentioned earlier, so you know they’re built to withstand nearly anything.

How do Atlas StormMaster shingles compare to SBS? Because they’re manufactured with the same material, they’re both extremely durable. However, because Atlas StormMaster shingles are made using Scotchgard Protector, they’re completely algae resistant and can withstand higher wind speeds than SBS shingles.
